Love is the Switch that Turns the Light On
Jesus told us that love is the most important attribute we possess
'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these. (Mark 12:30-31)
The Apostle Paul reiterated this when he wrote:
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. (1Corinthians 3:1-2)
This is God's unconditional (agapao) love, not friendship (phileo) or romantic (eros) love. [Unfortunately, our English Bible's translate all three as 'love']
According to 1Corinithians 13:4-8 (NIV), agapao love is:
Patient (long-suffering), kind, rejoices in the truth, protects, trusts, hopes, perseveres, never fails
Agapao love is not:
envious, boastful, proud, rude, self-seeking, easily agnered, unforgiving (keeps no records of wrongs), evil
God's unconditional love is always flowing from His throne towards us and nothing can separate us from it except our own actions and attitudes
Neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)
It is only through agapao love that we become pure and holy
And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you, so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints. (1 Thessalonians 3:12)
Agapao love is not natural - we cannot manufacture it on our own - it only comes from God
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. (1John 4:7)
If we dont love (agapao) everyone, then we don't "know God"
He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (1John 4:8)
If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us (1John 4:12-13
We receive the ability to manifest God's agapao love through the 'new heart' and 'new spirit' (Ezekiel 36:26) that we receive when we are 'born again' (John 3:5-7)
The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:5)
God's agapao love must be given away - it is not ours to hoard
But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. (Luke 6:27-31)
But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. (Luke 6:32-35)
